Unha das grandes mulleres que forman parte do meu póker de damas do Coiro é Gerda Van de Stroom-De Jong, unha artesá do Coiro sobre a que lera e vira algúns dos seus traballos en páxinas moi rebuscadas de Internet e no libro presentación da "Leder Guilde". O pasado 2018 coincidín con ela e na viaxe de volta a casa dinme conta de quen era, o pasado outubro volvín a coincidir con ela en Arnhem, así que aproveitei para coñecela en persoa e ter con ela unha conversa breve pero intensa, coa sorpresa de que ela coñecía a nosa Escola como "onde colgaron os estuches do teito para uhna exposición".

Espero poder presentárvola en persoa algún día na Escola e que nos amose como traballa, pero mentres aquí vos deixo un cuestionario para que coñezades máis a Gerda, que vive en Holanda nunha vila chamada Graveland preto de Amsterdam.



-Canto tempo levas traballando o Coiro?
-Empecei a facer algunha cousa con coiro en 1982.

-Como empezaches no Coiro?
-Alá por 1982, estaba buscando un novo hobby, tropecei cun anuncio nun xornal ... "Fai ti mesmo o teu cinto, nós cortamos a correa e tí podes montalo"..., así que pensei, isto xa é algo que facer.
O meu home e máis eu viaxamos ata a tenda chamada "Ledercentrale". En que mundo descoñecido me adentrei, unha tenda con todo tipo de subministros para o coiro.
O meu home topou un pack de patróns de Tandy para facer unhas alforxas e díxome: "Gerda, tí podes facerme isto para mín para poñer na miña motocicleta"?, e eu contesteille: "Eu non son quen de facer iso"; "sí, tí podes, só proba, o dependente pode amosarte como usar as ferramentas para facelo".
A idea de facer estas bolsas captou o meu interese e o home da tenda explicoume un pouco como labrar e como agarrar a coitela xiratoria e os mateadores. Probei a matear un pouco na tenda e sorprendínme de como funcionaban.
Isto foi interesante e inspirador, o meu home tivo a gran idea de mercar o pack de padróns, o coiro para facelo, un xogo de ferramentas, e un mazo, para poder comezar; todo isto como agasallo polo meu aniversario, que estaba preto.
Así que este agasallo para mín, facendo unhas alforxas para a súa moto..., era unha boa idea, para el, e para min.
O comezo foi divertido, facer o meu primeiro padrón labrado en coiro, e aí quedou, foi un gran descubrimento.

-Que ten o Coiro que non teña outro material?
-O coiro é un material natural tan grandioso, a variedade de cousas que facer con el é infinita, tendo en conta o respecto a de onde ven.

-Entre as diferentes técnicas que coñeces, cal é a túa favorita?
-De entre as diferentes técnicas é o labrado parte dos meus favoritos, tamén facer un deseño práctico para un produto é outra das cousas que tamén me gusta moito.
Tamén cada paso desde o deseño para completar un obxecto enteiro é cada vez un reto novo, por tanto entusiásmame para velo acabado. É moi divertido

-Que peza tes ganas de facer e aínda non fixeches?
-Unha das pezas que me gustaría facer e aínda non fixen son uns zapatos para min decorados cun bonito labrado.

-Que consello lle darías a alguén que está a empezar no traballo do Coiro?
-O meu consello para un principiante sería: "Just Start", só comeza e pensa que nada está mal, iso é, tanto coma ti poidas divertirte con isto. Debido á diversión, desexarás explorar, que, como e por que, polo tanto, aprender máis e máis.
Acude con preguntas ou dubidas a outros artesáns do coiro, a maioría deles poden darche boa información debido á súa experiencia.

-Tes algunha ferramenta única ou especial?

A súa primeira coitela xiratoria e a personalizada por Robert Beard

-Por suposto!!! Unhas ferramentas especiais feitas por Serge Volken, algunhas delas feitas aquí mesmo, foron un agasallo especial de Serge.
Tamén é especial a miña primeira coitela xiratoria.
Tampouco podo esquecer unha preciosa coitela xiratoria personalizada feita por Robert Beard.
AMO estas ferramentas, pero máis ás persoas que mas fixeron, eles están no fondo do meu corazón.

-Tes algún artesán do Coiro que consideres inspirador?
-Máis de un.
O vendedor do meu primeiro pack de coiro e ferramentas e padróns, que me introduciu no oficio, Dhr. Gerard Bartman, o propietario da tenda "Ledercentrale".
Despois chegou á miña vida Hendrik Nijhof, un gran artista do Coiro, a súa especialidade era facer fundas para coitelos, era un perfeccionista en todo o que fixo, foi como un "goeroe" (mentor) para mín nese momento.
Buscando máis artesáns do Coiro na miña vida atopei unha revista de Artesáns do Coiro, había unha carta de Serge Volken, quería coñecer artesáns do Coiro europeos, escribinlle no meu mellor inglés contándolle os meus plans para facer que o Coiro fose máis coñecido nos Paises Baixos, encantoume a súa resposta ó respecto, chamoume por teléfono e díxome que viría ós Paises Baixos, polo que entrou na miña vida. El é quen empurrou a pequena bóla de neve montaña abaixo e introducíume no seu mundo, ademais de moitos amigos de Coiro en todo o mundo.
GRANDES AMIGOS PARA SEMPRE.
En 1990 fun ós Estados Unidos por primeira vez, coñecendo a todos os grandes artesáns do Coiro que seguiron.
Fixen algunhas cousas bonitas ó longo dos anos co Coiro e tamén con todas as persoas que traballan co Coiro ou están interesadas neste material.
Converteume na persoa que son hoxe en día, unha persoa que está pensando e respirando Coiro.



-How long have You been working with leather?
-I Started to make something with leather in 1982.

-How did You start in leathercraft?
-That was in 1982, seeking for a new hobby, I stumbled on a advertisement in a newspaper ...."Make Your own belt, we can cut the strap and You can assemble it " ,..... so I thought, that is something else to do.
My husband and me took the trip to the shop, called "ledercentrale", what an onknowned world I stepped into, a shop with all kinds of leathersupply's.
My hubby found a Tandy patternpack for making saddlebags and said "Gerda You can make those for me, to put on my motorcycle" I Replyed, "I cannot make that", " yes You can, just try, the seller can show to You how to use the tools for it".
The idea to make these bags took my interest and the man in the shop explaned a little how to carve and how to hold the swivelknife and stamps.
I tryed some tooling at the shop and was surpriced how it worked.
That was interesting and inspiring, my hubby had the great idea to buy the patternpack, leather fot it, set of tools, mallet etc to start me off, all this as a gift for my birthday ( that was nearby).
So with this present for me, with that making a set of bags for His bike, that was a great idea thow, for me and for him.
The start with this was so cool, making the first patern carving in the leather and it stayed in it, that was great discovery .
I was hooked straight away.

-What does leather have that another material does'nt?
-Leather is such a great natural material, the variaty of things you can do with it, is endless, with the respect in mind of where it is coming from.

-Among the different techniques You know, wich one is Your favourite?
-Among the different techniques is the engraving (tooling) part of it is one of my favourite , but to do the design of a usefull product is a other one that is great to do.
Also every step from design to complete a whole object is every time a chalenge and new, therefore it is exciting to see it finished.
Gives a lot off enjoyment.

One of the great women who is part of my Leather Checkers poker is Gerda Van de Stroom - De Jong, a Leather Craftswoman about whom I have read and seen some of her work on highly sought after Internet pages and in the book presentation of "Leder Guilde ", last 2018 I met her and on the way back home I realized who she was, last October I met her again in Arnhem so I took the opportunity to meet her in person and have a brief but intense conversation with her, with the surprise that she knew our School as "where they hung the ceiling pencil cases for an exhibition." I hope to be able to introduce you in person someday at the School and show us how it works, but while here I leave you with a questionnaire to get to know Gerda better, who lives in Holland in a village called Graveland near Amsterdam.
-Which work piece do You feel like doing and not having done yet?
-The object I feel like doing and have'nt done yet is to make myself shoes with a nice carving on it.

-What would be Your piece of advice for anyone who is beginning?
-My advice for a beginner is: Just Start and think about that nothing is wrong, that is, aslong You have fun with it.
Because of the fun, You want to explore about, the what, the how and the why, therefore, learn more and more.
Go with questions or for advice to other leatherworkers, most of them will and can give good informations because of their experience.

-Have You got any "special"or unique tool?
- Sure,!!!! special tools made by Serge Volken, some of them He made here at our place, they were also gifts from Serge.
Also special is my first swivelknife.
Not to forget a beautifull custom swivelknife made by Robert Beard.
LOVE all those tools Plus the guys that made them, they are deep in my heart.

-Do You have a leathercrafter that You consider inspiring?
-More than one.
First the sellers of my first leather/tools and pattern pack, they introduced me into the craft. Dhr. Gerard Bartman,shop owner of the "ledercentrale".
Than came Hendrik Nijhof in my life, a great leatherartist his speciality making knife sheets, a perfectionist within everything he made, he was like a goeroe (mentor) for me at that time.
Looking for more leathercrafters in my life, I found the leathercrafters magazine, in there was a letter from Serge Volken , He wanted to meet european leatherworkers , I wrote in my best english to him, telling about my plans of making leathercraft more knowned in the Netherlands, loved his response on it, phoned me and told me He would come to the Netherlands and so He came into my life.
He is the one who pushed the little snowbal from the mountain down and introduced me into his world, plus to a lot of leatherfriends all over the world.
GREAT FRIENDS FOR EVER.
In 1990 I went to the USA for the first time, meeting all the other great leatherworkers that followed.
Done some nice things over the years, with and becouse of the leather, also with all the persons who working with leather, or are interested in this materiaal.
It made me into the person that I am to day, one who is thinking and breathing leather.
